After the French Laundry, D and I had an even more special meal to look forward to in California.
My uncle held a series of dinner parties and lunches to celebrate a milestone birthday this year, and we jumped at the invitation to attend one.
His cooking is a sophisticated, creative blend of French and Californian, mixing and matching different ideas and recipes from cookbooks, magazines, and his own imagination. And he’s amassed quite the wine cellar over the years, so it’s always a treat to try the wines he pairs with each course.
But above all, it’s the company – my aunt and uncle, their friends, and the occasional dog or cat wandering under the table – that makes these meals better than eating in any restaurant.
Take a look at our lunch…
So fresh and delicate – slices of scallop sandwiching tangerine gel This was my favorite dish! |
Rich, rich, rich! Three creamy layers: foie, celeriac, and mushroom |
An elegant dish – delicate fish in a subtle sauce with home-grown sorrel |
The oyster was bubbling in garlic butter, like a fancy escargot, and the cold caviar made for a luxurious contrast |
Absolutely delectable flourless chocolate cake served atop a hazelnut meringue, with cinnamon cream |
