D and I made a quick trip to Washington DC recently – it was a great visit, with lots of sightseeing, visiting with friends, and (of course) eating.
Our first stop after dropping our bags at the hotel was the Off the Record bar in the Hay-Adams Hotel, just across Lafayette Square from the White House. The perfect spot for a welcome-to-DC drink!
The bar is decorated with political cartoons and caricatures, even down to the coasters, which include the whole range of 2016 presidential candidates.
Clinton, Sanders, and Trump had been cleared out, but you could still end up with Marco Rubio with a collection of water bottles, Ben Carson holding an olive in surgical pincers, or Carly Fiorina with a bottle of California bubbly. I’m rather fond of my smiling Joe Biden coaster.
In the late afternoon, the bar wasn’t crowded. There were a few other tourists, a group posted up at a table covered with papers and laptops (nice place to work!), and a journalist job interview.
I particularly liked the Aged Rum Daiquiri, which was dark and sweet and tangy with citrus. If we’d had another day in the city, I would have returned for another.
We had beautiful weather for the first part of our visit, which we took advantage of by walking around the mall.
More to come!
