In the spirit of exploration, D and I headed over to the other side of the island for lunch earlier this week. Admittedly, it’s only a couple of miles, but there’s a totally different view and even slightly different weather. And since I really like the island Christmas music they play here, any car trip – even a very short one – is a good excuse to listen to more of it.
We’ve been to Trattoria Tramonto many times for wonderful Italian dinners, listening to opera and watching the lights of St Martin in the distance. But this was the first time for us to see it in the daylight.
Not bad, huh?
The menu is a little more casual at lunch, and so is the scene, with diners coming in straight from their lounge chairs outside. It’s perfectly beachy.
I had a glass of rosé and some spaghetti with diced tomatoes and some spicy pepper flakes, served with a split crayfish on top – tender, slightly sweet, and definitely the star of lunch. D had carbonara, a lighter take on the usual rich dish.
Afterwards we went out to explore the beach a little. There’s a shaded “beach shack” next to the restaurant, and just beyond lies one of the most perfect stretches of ocean imaginable.
The sand slopes into the sea ever-so-gradually, and it takes quite a while to get even chest deep; the water is warm and clear as glass, broken only by gentle waves. We bobbed around for a bit before climbing out and heading back to the hotel.
What a lovely lunch!
