For a look at the surfer-cool side of Zihuatanejo, head to Loot. It’s a combination coffee shop, surf shop, music venue, and art gallery – or, as their website puts it:
THE UNDERLYING ESSENCE OF THE BRAND IS TO OFFER A PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE TO OUR CUSTOMERS THROUGH CAREFULLY CURATED FASHION, DESIGN, ART, SURF, MUSIC AND GASTRONOMY… AIMING TO BE THE CATALYST OF A NEW PROPOSITIVE DESIGN MARKET IN IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO.
While I’m not sure what propositive design is, I am a fan of Loot!
To find it, walk down Playa de Ropa until you reach the Viceroy and walk through the grounds away from the beach. Loot is just down the main road to the right.
The shop could just as easily be in Montauk or Venice, CA, with surfboards hanging overhead and a vintage Jeep parked inside. There’s a linebacker-sized arrangement of fresh flowers, cool surf posters on the walls, and just the right amount of interesting merchandise scattered throughout.
We visited in the morning, to take advantage of a just slightly cooler walk down the beach – temperatures were over 100º every day!
If you’d like to see a different side of Zihuatanejo, do stop by Loot for a coffee (I had a delicious mocha) and a good browse.
