I’ve heard of those old-fashioned menus without prices, meant to be given to the ladies at the table, but never seen one until our trip to Mackinac Island, and the Carriage House restaurant at the Iroquois Hotel.
After I finished admiring the lakefront view, I noticed that something about my menu seemed unusual. No numbers! What an odd feeling – I hadn’t realized that I actually use the prices as a source of information when trying to decide what to eat, especially in figuring out how substantial a dish might be (eg, Will this salad be big enough for a meal?)
D let me look at his menu to get my bearings as I considered the options – a wide array of salads and sandwiches.
I ended up choosing “The Best BLT”, because really, I always have to test a bold statement like this. (You may remember “the best tasting yogurt in the world“) In fact, it was definitely one of the best BLTs I’ve had, flavorful but not over-the-top. The very crisp bacon on whole wheat toast was balanced out by soft leaf lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a subtly zingy jalapeno mayo.
D had the whitefish sandwich, made from broiled fish and served warm. I think he was a little jealous of my BLT.
