With 12 hours of travel down and 5 to go, the thought of a Cuban sandwich kept us going. Finally, at 830pm, we made it to Cafe Versailles in the Miami airport.
It’s an outpost of Miami’s self-proclaimed “World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant“, with three locations in Terminal D (Gates D5, 21, and 44).
We had also stopped for brunch on our outbound journey. I got a cortado with sugar – a sweetened shot of espresso with a bit of milk. Small but delicious.
I also had a guava and cheese pastel (a flaky turnover with some guava paste and cream cheese) and a spinach and cheese empanada. It was all so good that we were already looking forward to our transit back through MIA in a week – and that’s not something I ever thought I would say!
As for the Cuban sandwich I wolfed down on our return… I am generally not a fan of sandwiches, and certainly not ham sandwiches, but the combination of warm, soft-yet-crusty bread surrounding lean ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles yields something superb. I can’t think of anything more comfortingly filling when one is 12 hours into a 17 hour voyage!

I don’t know where you’re going, honey, but I sure hope that there are trip reports upon your return!

Hard to believe but we didn't go to Anguilla this year. It's wonderful to hear from you!
