This weekend I went to New York, so I ate lots of ridiculously wonderful food. Fortunately, I also walked all over Manhattan, so I can rationalize that I earned it. Really!
One of my go-to places in Manhattan (not-so-coincidentally near my hotel) is Bouchon Bakery – quite a contrast to the original location in Yountville. This one is tucked away on the third floor of the Time Warner building, with nary a ray of natural sunlight, but its shelves have almost the same selection of delights.
I chose a sticky bun that was nearly identical to the one I’d had in Yountville, along with a generous selection of chocolate bouchons and shortbread cookies and chocolates… As usual, I left with a very heavy bag.
As I left Bouchon I noticed that there was a classic car gathering just outside, along Columbus Circle – just as there had been in Yountville the last time I was at Bouchon Bakery there. Is there some sort of mysterious connection that draws classic car owners to Thomas Keller properties?
I strolled along the line of flawlessly restored Cobras and admired their shiny perfection, then headed back to my hotel with my bounty. The big, nutty sticky bun proved to be the ideal fuel for my busy afternoon.
