After walking the mall to the Lincoln Memorial, we headed up to the White House area for lunch at the Bombay Club. The weather was lovely, so we asked for one of the patio tables so we could enjoy the fresh air and people watch.
The Bombay Club has a fantastic option for lunch – thalis, which are platters with a selection of dishes. I love to sample a variety of things when I have Indian food, so this is perfect.
You can choose from the Club thali (fish, chicken, and lamb), a seafood thali, or my selection – the vegetarian Bombay thali. I had fun mixing and matching the flavors!
After lunch, we made our way to the Renwick Gallery, just steps south. It’s a much smaller space than most of the other Smithsonian museums, and when we visited it was hosting Wonder, an exhibition of full-room, immersive art.
My favorite piece was a stunning, glowing rainbow of… thread? Beams of light? It spanned the whole room, and I could have spent an hour looking at it from every angle.
Other highlights were a room filled with piles of what looked like index cards, taller than a person and shaped like stalagmites or coral, and a sort of chandelier of dangling crystal LEDs that sparkled in their own rhythm.
D is a Chihuly fan and always on the lookout for his work – we found one of his pieces, all blue and white curlicues, on the ceiling above a copy of Hiram Powers’ The Greek Slave.
I think the Renwick will be reverting to more traditional exhibitions now that Wonder is wrapping up, so do look into what they’ll be showing if you make a visit. It’s a great option for a slightly-under-the-radar museum stop!
